Net refund and purchase-amount bands
- From 1 November 2026, this guide uses the new system: pay the tax-inclusive price first, then obtain a refund after departure customs confirmation. It does not use the old checkout tax-exemption process.
- For goods taxed at 10%, the tax within the gross price is 10/110, about 9.0909%. Some goods, including qualifying food, may use 8%; do not apply 10% universally.
- You must meet the eligible nonresident visitor criteria and spend at least JPY 5,000 before tax at the same participating shop on the same day. Goods in the purchase record must be available for customs confirmation.
- Carry the goods abroad within 90 days of purchase and obtain customs confirmation. The shop or its provider then refunds through the applicable channel.
- Shop or operator fees remain unverified. Assuming an unknown fee is zero is a before-fee estimate, not a guaranteed 9.0909% net refund; confirm the actual refund and fees before paying.
